The VY Holden Commodore was
the first major update to the 3rd series of Commodores. The outside was
completely remade and updated with more angular features in contrast to the
rounder look of the VT and VX Commodore’s. The VY headlights were a more
aggressive, angular design. The VY headlights on lower models retained the
teardrop, however once again more high end models did not have this added.
Projector lights were also an extra feature of the more top end
versions of the VY headlights for Commodore. Given the popularity of Euro cars
at the time, Holden designed the VY headlights to be inline with the European
style.
The tail lamp design saw the centre garnish removed from all
versions and the shape was upgraded to a triangular look. Once again different
versions received slightly different taillight styling. The VZ Commodore was the
final release of the third generation Commodores and overall the model looked
pretty much the same as the VY headlights Commodore but did receive a slightly
new front end and the teardrop was removed from all headlights. The projector
light was retained on the more luxurious models.
Not yet seen in previous models, the back end of the VZ was also been given
an upgrade, now featuring a unique tinted addition to the bottom half.
Holden took quite some time in improving the upcoming Commodore
after the VZ. From 1997 until 2006, Holden enthusiasts had to anticipate until
the VE was delivered. With nearly One Billion Dollars cashed in on the
improvement of the VE, Holden used the time on getting this particular model
looking just right. The VE Commodore was also completely engineered in Australia
which was also a new thing for Holden. The VE featured a fresh design that was
not seen beforehand in the past designs. A broader stance, complete 50/50 weight
dispersion and blazed guards put in to the more belligerent style of this
design.
The VE Commodore headlights were of a crossed design, identical to the
previous VZ Commodore but were larger complete. Once again newer models received
a black reflector and projector
headlamps. Some of the hugest changes for the VE was the change of design
for the tail lights. Luxury designs were provided with Euro style tail lamps
while the sportier styles, including the SSV, were given fantastic, and widely
known red circle and black chrome features. The SSV tail
lights are becoming a very familiar easy-install upgrade for the VE with the
increased fashion these offered.
In a big deed for Holden, the high
end model HSV was given an entirely new back end to give it a completely new and
different look. This was another path of HSV in particular moving to a more
European design.
